The collection includes poems such as Still I Rise, Harlem Hopscotch, and Me and My Work. Through them, Angelou writes about identity, family, work, history, love, and the experience of being Black in America. Her writing can be direct and personal, but there is often a strong sense of rhythm running through it.

The book was edited by Edwin Graves Wilson, Angelou’s longtime colleague at Wake Forest University. Short notes give readers some background to the poems and help explain certain words and references. Jerome Lagarrigues paintings accompany the poems throughout the book.

It’s a good introduction to Maya Angelou’s poetry and to the themes that appeared throughout her writing.
