In the summer of 2005, Moerenuma Park had its grand opening, symbolizing the completion of Isamu Noguchi's final and largest project, 17 years after his death. This monumental event commemorated Noguchi's life and the collaborative efforts behind the park's development. The park’s completion was seen by many as the realization of a long-cherished dream, and to mark the occasion, exhibitions were held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sapporo and Tokyo, celebrating Noguchi’s profound influence on public spaces and environmental design.
Noguchi, famous for his stone sculptures, lighting designs, and furniture, also left a lasting mark on landscape design, particularly through his work on public spaces like Moerenuma Park. His philosophy of "comprehensive sculpture art" extended beyond individual pieces to include their interaction with the environment and the people who experience them. The exhibitions displayed 46 works, ranging from abstract forms to massive sculptures like "Energy Void," a 3.6-meter, 17-ton structure. The exhibitions and the park itself were made possible with the support of several foundations, researchers, and sponsors.
