Based around Matter’s large photographic archive, the book offers a close and personal look at Giacometti, his sculptures, his studio, his models, and the spaces where he lived and worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHerbert Matter (1907-1984), the influential Swiss-born photographer and graphic designer, was a close friend of Giacometti and photographed the artist and his work over many years. His images go beyond simple documentation, using light, scale, detail, and unusual viewpoints to capture both Giacometti’s sculptures and the atmosphere around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe book includes a text by painter and writer Mercedes Matter, a foreword by Louis Finkelstein, an introduction by Andrew Forge, correspondence from Alberto Giacometti to Herbert Matter, and a complete list of plates. The Japanese edition was translated by art critic Shigeo Chiba, who also contributed a text to the book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst published in English in 1987, the Japanese edition followed in 1988 through Libroport.
