Égoïste Magazine is a rare gem of a publication. Created in 1977 by Nicole Wisniak, it stands apart for its oversized format, unmistakable black-and-white visual identity, and its refusal to follow conventional timelines—only 17 issues have come out in nearly 40 years.
It’s not just a magazine, but a curated object: entirely black and white, each issue feels like a gallery, bringing together the work of iconic photographers like Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton with writing from literary voices like Françoise Sagan and J.M.G. Le Clézio. The tone is bold, intelligent, intimate—often blurring the line between editorial and high-concept advertising. Wisniak reimagined the role of advertising by treating it as part of the magazine’s creative language, commissioning brands to produce bespoke campaigns that feel entirely in sync with the editorial world.
There’s a real sense of timelessness to Égoïste. It doesn’t follow trends or chase deadlines—it just appears when it has something to say.
This edition, No°13 – Tome II, features Le Cirque du Soleil clowns on the cover, photographed by Richard Avedon, and includes a 279-page journey through the fashion and culture of 1992. Contributions range from literature by Samuel Beckett and Botho Strauss to campaigns by Diane von Fürstenberg and André Gregory, all under the artistic direction of Philippe Morillon.
