Hockney's Dog Days (1998) is a collection dedicated to the artist’s dachshunds, Stanley and Little Boodgie, showcasing 84 colour illustrations that go beyond simple sketches.
Hockney’s affection for dachshunds began with Heinz, a pet belonging to his friend Ian Falconer, leading to the adoption of Stanley and later, Little Boodgie. Through these pets, Hockney was able to find comfort after the loss of many friends to AIDS and the death of close companion Henry Geldzahler.
The series explores not only their companionship but the artist’s dedication to painting them daily, revealing his devotion to the study of form, colour, and composition. Hockney’s Dog Days is both a memoir and an art study, filled with warmth, humour, and an exploration of the deep bond between the artist and his beloved dogs.
“I realised I was painting my best friends, Stanley and Boodgie. They sleep with me; I'm always with them here. They don't go anywhere without me and only occasionally do I leave them. They're like little people to me. The subject wasn't dogs but my love of the little creatures.”
