This is the exhibition book for Warhol: Mirror of His Time 1956–86, held in Japan in 1996.

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was one of the most iconic figures of post-World War II American culture. Emerging in the 1950s New York scene as a commercial illustrator, he soon transitioned to fine art in the early 1960s. Through silkscreening and other mechanical techniques, he reimagined mass-produced imagery—Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Coca-Cola bottles—disrupting the art world and becoming synonymous with Pop Art. Beyond visual art, Warhol left an indelible mark across a range of creative disciplines, from experimental cinema and music production to publishing. A central figure of 1960s underground culture, he continued to shape the social and cultural fabric of New York through the 1970s and beyond.

Although Warhol had been admired early in Japan, there had been few chances to fully engage with the breadth of his work. This exhibition was made possible through the generous cooperation of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh—founded in 1994 as a joint initiative of the Carnegie Institute, Dia Center for the Arts, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The show presented approximately 200 major works, including paintings, drawings, films, sculptures, and installations, and traced Warhol’s evolution from his visit to Japan in 1956 through to the final years of his life in 1986.
